A whole building design approach was used – the building envelope, mechanical systems, and operation and maintenance of the building were designed to integrate with one another. The result was a significant reduction in the HVAC, electrical and equipment loads, and overall energy costs. An energy model created by Fore Solutions was used for daylight simulation and skylight placement; to downsize the mechanical system, reduce ventilation and increase heat recovery; to lower operating costs; to optimize roof insulation; and to size photovoltaics.
